Patricia Kuhl is a professor at the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of Washington. She is an expert in early language and bilingual brain development and internationally recognized for her pioneering work that shows how young children learn. In her TED talk, Dr. Kuhl talks about how babies start life with brains that are receptive to the sounds of all languages. By taking statistics, babies start to gradually tune in to the language(s) they hear regularly. That way, they become experts—or what we call “native speakers”—of one or more language(s).
