In our family, we have subscribed to Highlights, a U.S. children’s magazine with stories, activities, and worksheets for all ages. Founded by Garry Cleveland Myers and his wife Caroline Clark Myers in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, the magazine began publication in June 1946. Today it’s still in the family and is run by the founder’s granddaughter.
They have a broad range of products with three main magazines for different ages:
Hello Magazine (0-2 years)
Hello is made for babies and toddlers. Each magazine is focused on a specific topic (food, an animal, a song etc). It’s made with tear-resistant paper and is stitched (not stapled) so it’s safe for young hands. They even deliver it in a germ-free package.
High Five Magazine & High Five Bilingüe Magazine (2-6 years)
High Five is made for children in preschool and kindergarten. It comes in an English and a bilingual Spanish/English version. Both feature stories, easy recipes, arts and crafts ideas, and activities like spot the difference or find hidden object. Some of the stories in the English version of High Five have Spanish words included so children get slowly exposed to Spanish as well.
Highlights (6-12 years)
Highlights is geared towards elementary school children. Each Highlights magazine includes stories, puzzles, games, science experiments, arts and craft projects, and riddles.
A nice feature of all magazines: they do not include any third-party advertising or commercial messages.
In our family, we currently subscribe to High Five Magazine for about $32 per year. So we get a new issue delivered to our house every months.
