I’m Veronika. I grew up as a monolingual German, but started to develop an affinity for different languages and cultures in school. I spent time as a student in England, Mexico, and the United States—studying and teaching German, English, and Spanish. Eventually, I graduated with a Ph.D. in Applied linguistics/TESOL and turned my passion for languages into a job as a research scientist, investigating how to best facilitate language learning and assessment.
It is probably not surprising that my private life is also full of different languages and cultures. I now live in New Jersey. I’m married to a native Hawaiian and have a daughter who speaks English, German, and a bit of Spanish.
Why this website?
Over the past years, I have found myself answering questions like the ones below from other parents:
“Can I raise Alex bilingually if I only speak English?”
“What’s the best way to expose Julia to a different language?”
Also, I noticed that some parents were struggling to the extent that they gave up on the idea of raising their children with multiple languages.
So in 2018, I decided to launch Bilingual Babies in order to share personal experiences and knowledge from research, thus providing a platform with information, tips, and resources for bilingual families.
Bottom line: I truly believe that exposure to different languages is one of the most valuable gifts we can give to a child—whether we as parents speak one, two, three or more languages ourselves.
